VM_Create error and Windows 11

Error “VM_Create on cgame failed”

The game drops you from the server or you cannot join, and the console shows ERROR: VM_Create on cgame failed. Almost always the cause is the Windows 11 feature Smart App Control. Below is a step by step fix.

Is this really it?

Yes, if you have Windows 11 and see one of these:
  • in the game console: VM_Create on cgame failed or VM_Create on UI failed,
  • a Windows notification: Part of this app has been blocked.
Windows 10, Linux and Android do not have this problem.

How to fix it (2 minutes)

Open the settings

Click Start and type Smart App Control. Open the result with that name.
Another way: Windows Security, then App & browser control, then Smart App Control settings.

Choose “Off”

Select Off and confirm. If it is set to Evaluation, choose Off as well, because Windows may switch it to On by itself later.

Restart the computer

After the restart start the game and join etps.pl. The game downloads any missing files by itself.

Is it safe?

The Windows antivirus (Microsoft Defender) keeps working and still protects your computer. You only turn off the extra block on unknown programs.

Note: on older Windows 11 versions (before 25H2) this feature cannot be turned back on without reinstalling Windows. On newer versions you can turn it on again in the same place.

Why it happens

Our mod has its own game files (cgame_mp_x86.dll, ui_mp_x86.dll and their 64 bit versions). The game downloads them from the server and runs them. Smart App Control only lets through files Microsoft already knows or files with a paid publisher signature. Our files change with every server update, so Windows sees them as new every time and sometimes blocks them. That is why you can join fine one day and not the next.

It is not a virus and nothing is wrong with your computer. Other ET mods have the same problem.

Still not working?

  • Your antivirus removed the file. If you use another antivirus, check its quarantine and add the game's etps folder to the exclusions.
  • Broken download. Close the game and delete only the zzz_etps*.pk3 and *.dll files from the etps folder. The game downloads them again. Your settings stay.
    ET: Legacy keeps this folder in Documents\ETLegacy\etps, ET 2.60 in the game folder.
  • Hunk allocation failed is a different error: in the main menu console type seta com_hunkMegs 512 and restart the game.
